I know my last blog was concerning the end of your pets life. But, I had no intention on stumbling upon this information, otherwise I would of somehow included it in the last discussion.
Before we continue, let's make sure we all understand that what hospice means.
Hospice (for humans) is when you are assigned a healthcare agency that helps make your loved one last days on this earth comfortable. Its the process in death where you have decided all treatments have been done, and now you just want your love one to rest...comfortably.
Now, Is hospice right for our pets?
Being in the medical field for over 15 years, I will tell you the same as I have told other clients.
This is a personal decision that should be decided amongst you and the rest of the family. Because watching someone (something) die slowly is a challenge not only mentally but physically. Its not as easy as one may think it is. Here you are at the beside of a loved one, knowing any day could be there last.
Many people may feel that this is taking "care for your pet" to a whole another level. Our pets ARE a part of our family. And when one of our family members are sick we go that extra mile for them, hoping and praying that they'd get better. So again the question is, is hospice too much for our pets?
I say if you could afford it, then why not. Don't be naïve, medical care in general is expensive. Especially specialty care such as hospice. No, when it comes to family we would sell our souls just to make their pain and suffering go away. This should be the same for our pets. No one else is as loyal to you and your family than your pet. (Seriously, think of how your pet loves you no matter what!)
Hospice care for your family or pet should be a FAMILY decision. This will affect you no matter how it turns out. And don't feel bad if you cannot give your pet this special treatment. Your pet knows that love them....why not spend what little time they have left letting them know that.
